Chances are that each of us will get sick or need to care for a sick family member sometime this year.
But many of our schools’ food service workers find themselves without something that we take for granted: the right to a “sick day.”
Around 75% of all low-wage workers do not have a single paid sick day they can use for themselves or to care for a family member. While school meals are among the country’s strongest anti-hunger programs, many K-12 school food service workers find themselves having to choose between going to work while sick or losing a day’s pay for their families.
But we can do better. We need to be sure that every measure is being taken to protect our children’s health while they’re at school - and that our school’s food service workers have the right to sick days. This way, they can focus on getting better and getting back to work.
